Hair Transplantation and Treatment

What are the causes of hair loss?

Hair loss is a condition that occurs due to genetic and hormonal changes and old age, seen both in women and men and causing physical and therefore psychological problems. Hair loss can also occur based on various dermatological diseases, burns and accidents.

What is the hair’s lifecycle?

Hair roots are within a cycle that is made up of a long period of growth followed by a short period of rest. During the resting period the strand is connected to the bulb but there is no growth. At the end of the resting period, however, the strand falls and a new strand starts growing. As the age increases, the resting period gets longer.  While normally the development period (anagen phase) lasts for 3-5 years, the rest period (telogen phase) that follows it starts with a 1-2 week long transition period (catagen phase) and lasts for 3-4 months.

What are the causes of male-type baldness and how does it occur?

While in men there is thinning in hair or noticeable hairlessness in top or forehead due to hair root loss, there is no hair loss in the area left between two ears in the area at nape. The reason for this is the two different hair roots. The first type of hair roots in the forehead and top areas are sensitive to testosterone hormone. And with the effect of this hormone, hair roots are damaged and thus hair loss occurs. The second type of hair roots are not sensitive to testosterone hormone. And due to this reason they do not fall. Hence, the hair transplantation procedure is to get the hair roots at the nape that are not sensitive to the hormone and to transplant it to the hairless areas on forehead and top. Hair roots which are transplanted this way do not fall again because they are not sensitive to the hormone.

How is the hair transplantation performed?

One of the most important developments in aesthetic and plastic surgery is hair restoration with mini and micrograft transplantation. More natural and successful results can be obtained with this technique in comparison to the other methods. This method can be summarized as the extraction of scalp with long elliptic shape from the area at the nape (FUT) and dividing the hair roots in this skin strip into 1 to 3 groups or taking the roots one by one as grafts with the help of special motor (FUE) and transferring one by one into the desired area to be restored.

What kind of anesthesia is being applied?

Hair transplantation procedure can be done by applying sedation intravenously together with local anesthesia or only with local anesthesia either in FUT or FUE.
