Rhinoplasty

Nasal Tip rhinoplasty:

Nose can be divided into two parts as body (dorsum)  and tip, Sometimes problems may be related with the nasal tip without any problem on the body. In such cases, it is possible to perform nasal tip  surgery (tip plasty) without any intervention to the dorsum and to obtain a beautiful nasal tip which is harmonized with the face and other parts of the nose.

In aesthetic procedure of the nasal tip (tip plasty), only the cartilage and soft tissue of 1/3 lower part of the nose is shaped. Nasal tip may be lifted and reduced in most cases. If nasal tip is very small and excessively lifted, it may be enlarged and lowered through a reverse procedure.

Since the cartilage of the middle part which is called ‘septum’ is not operated, surgery is performed without nasal packing. No bruises appear, swelling may be minimum; recovery period, return to daily life and business life occurs within a very short time.

Who are eligible candidates for rhinoplasty?

Anyone who is about 17-18 years old, have complaints about the shape of the nose and breathing and have realistic expectations may be a candidate for rhinoplasty. Along with good general health, individuals who will have rhinoplasty operation  should also be physiologically healthy.

Individuals who ask for a miracle should know that aesthetic surgery is performed in order to make the individuals look better and more beautiful than their former status, before deciding to have a rhinoplasty. And they should know that  Miracles sometimes occur. The more realistic your expectations are, the higher your possibility to become satisfied and happy about the results of the surgery will be.

You should discuss exactly what you can obtain from the surgery with your surgeon. When your expectations are reasonable and formed by suggestions of your surgeon, recovery period would be more peaceful and healthy.

What are the indications for rhinoplasty?

Aesthetic procedure of the nose (rhinoplasty) is performed to correct both shape and functional breathing problems of the nose. If you breathe difficultly from your nose and you plan to have a nose surgery ( rhinoplasty), you should have both procedures in one session.  Because, cartilage parts that will be removed from the nose to open respiratory tract may be used to reconstruct the nose for aesthetic procedure. Therefore, having both procedures in one session is an important advantage.

If you had septoplasty surgery in order to open your breath and decided to have an aesthetic nose procedure after, we may have to take the cartilage parts from your ear or a rib if cartilage is required for nasal reshaping.

Large, long, hook noses with lower tips are aesthetically reconstructed and reshaped in aesthetic procedure of the nose (rhinoplasty) whereas noses which are small, descended, short with excessively lifted tip may also be reconstructed and made beautiful by aesthetic nose procedure.

What are the risks and complications of nasal aesthetics?

One of the risks of rhinoplasty is failure to obtain the nasal shape expected by the individual. The possibility to getting such result is between 5 and 10% among all  rhinoplasty procedure. This is actually not a high rate. In order to eliminate such possibility or to minimize getting such unexpected result, you should listen your surgeon about current shape of your nose and possible future shape of your nose after the surgery carefully, understand your surgeon’s considerations and determine your expectations accordingly.

Other risks are almost same with risks of all other procedures.

Planning in Aesthetic Nasal Procedure (Rhinoplasty):

When the patient comes for examination before nasal aesthetics, we make a computer design based on the pictures taken and by considering expectations of the patient after a discussion and we inform the patient about the approximate result after the procedure.

How is Rhinoplasty performed?

Aesthetic procedure of the nose is performed under general anesthesia. If a very small procedure is necessary, local anesthesia may rarely be applied. Technically, open and closed rhinoplasty techniques exist. Some procedures are performed with closed technique and some with open techniques. I generally prefer open technique in rhinoplasty because I find it safer and it provides better tip reconstruction.

Does bruising  and swelling appear after aesthetic nose procedure?

Swelling and bruising with different grades  may appear after aesthetic procedure of the nose. Frequency and severity of  swelling and bruising  are decreased thanks to latest technical development. If drugs and foods which create tendency to bleeding are avoided before the surgery, bruising and swelling does not appear or they occur less after surgery. Furthermore, since there is no bleeding in open rhinoplasty technique performed on subpericondrial and subperiosteal plane, bruising does not appear. Also, if micromotor is used during operating on nasal bones and removing the arch, possibility of swelling and bruising also decreases.

What is septorhinoplasty?

If there is a bone and cartilage curvature in the middle vault of the nose, the condition is called as septum deviation . Deviation of such areas and especially hypertrophy of the conchas make your breathing difficult and impossible in some cases. So, the procedures in which only septal deviation is corrected are called septoplasty; and procedures where septal deviations and nasal shape are both corrected with aesthetic nasal procedure in the same session are called septorhinoplasty.

How does nasal aesthetics change according to gender?

Characteristics of the nose is different in female and male gender. For example, nasal tip in women should be slightly wider than the dorsum and lifted above, and a pleasant but no too excessive curve should exist on the dorsum. However, such nose shape does not fit on the male face and it does not look good. In men, noses with flat dorsum and a tip that is sharper than nasal body which does not have too wide angle are deemed beautiful.

What is Revision or Secondary nasal aesthetics?

Sometimes the patient may not be pleased with the result after a rhinoplasty or septorhinoplasty; in this situation, correction procedure called revision or secondary aesthetic nose surgery. In traditional textbooks, possibility of this case is reported as 10% in general. If the problem which causes dissatisfaction is a minor problem; for example your surgeon lifts your nasal tip but you want it to be lifted more or your surgeon created a curve on the dorsum, but you want more or size and shape of your nose look beautiful but the tip is slightly deviated, the problem may be resolved by rasping or using a few sutures and you may return to work without being away from your daily life.

What should be expected from nasal aesthetics?

The most important thing that should be known by the individuals who think to have an aesthetic nose procedure is that in the end there is a limit for nose shape; in other words, we cannot guarantee to make your nose identical to any other nose shape that you desire, because it is not possible.  Therefore, it is not a correct attitude to go to your surgeon’s office with pictures of other people.

The rightest  and sensible question that will be asked to your surgeon is “what are characteristics of my nose?”and “what could the most possible change be?”. When nasal aesthetics is approached from this point of view, expectations become more correct and clear, so satisfaction rates significantly increase.

Which noses are beautiful?

A beautiful nose disappears on the  face and keeps its adequate profile. A beautiful nose is proportional to other parts of the face as well as with its parts. Actually, there is no such thing as a perfect nose. If eyes are prominent when compared with the nose, nose  is beautiful and complies with the face.
