Treatment of temporomandibular joint diseases.

The treatment of TMJ diseases, also known as the craniomandibular joint, is a joint with which we can open and close our mouth and which is located between the head and lower jaw. As with all joints in our body, the articular surface consists of the cartilage structure. The joint disc is a concave cartilage structure on both sides, which enables the movements of the temporomandibular joint. Any pressure on the articular cartilage for any reason causes the cartilage to lose water and thus shrink the volume. As cartilage cells are unable to regenerate, joint pressure disorder occurs with continued pressure. The causes of TMJ disorders can be accidents and bumps, rheumatism and clenched teeth.

The main function of the lower jaw is chewing and speaking. During the maximum jaw opening, the temporomandibular joint performs two different movements, simple joint movements and forward sliding and rotating movements.

Closures that cause deviations from the normal position of the mouth cause cramps in the masticatory muscles, which is one of the main causes of malfunctions in the temporomandibular joint. There is a classic trilogy of pain in jaw dysfunction.

Treatment of temporomandibular joint diseases

Pain

  • Noise comes from the joint
  • Restricted jaw movement
  • Pain

There may be preliminary information about the cause of the pain. The pain that begins in the early hours of the morning is caused by the clenching of teeth (gnashing of teeth) that goes unnoticed during night sleep and causes pain in the jaw muscles. Pain that begins late in the day is caused by jaw movements and is usually due to a problem in the TMJ. Joint pain is aggravated by movement and is permanent. The pain in the jaw muscles increases with the stress and comes in intervals.

The shape of the noise from the joint can also provide information about its cause. If there is only single clicking sound, it is a harmless sound that normally 40% of society is watching and disappears by itself. If there are clicking sounds both opening and closing the mouth; this occurs due to the compression of the displaced joint disc (forwards and downwards) when opening and closing the mouth. The sound of a crack in the joint can indicate that the joint surfaces are bruised, lose their softness, and degeneration in the joint begins.

Restricted jaw movement; It can occur with irreversible forward dislocation of the joint disc, joint adhesion and calcification (ankylosis), cheekbone fractures.

TMJ disorders are complicated both in determining the causes and in planning treatment. Comparative arteries may require computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging for diagnosis. The treatment methods are very different, such as medication, physical therapy, washing closed joints and open joint operations.
